The State Secretary of The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, dr. Marjan Podgoršek, presents the award to Zvone Černelič from the Černelič Biodynamic Farm.

The Černelič Biodynamic Farm was on the 25th of June 2020 announced as the winner of category “Popular vote” at the european competiton Rural Inspiration Awards, held by the European Comission.

This award recognises the most inspiring initiatives funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) in the year 2020, demonstrating the contribution of Rural Development policy in promoting rural climate action and the bioeconomy.

The Černelič farming operation began in 1994 with the purchase of a small 2.5 ha farm. Today, the farm comprises 40 ha (of which 6 ha are owned and 34 ha are leased) spanning ten villages (half in upland areas where grazing livestock help prevent overgrowth).

In the village Dečno selo near Brežice, on the east part of Slovenia, the Černelič biodynamic farm has been farming organically since 2003, and in 2014 they obtained the DEMETER certificate, which means that they grow their crops according to the principles of biodynamics. Their basic goal is the production of quality and nutritious crops with a positive impact on the environment and nature. Crop rotation, fertilization with biodynamic compost of domestic cattle and sowing of mixed crops are used to increase the percentage of organic matter in the soil, thus contributing to a greater CO2 sink and thus to reducing the impact on climate change. They also contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment. They are happy to share their knowledge and experience with others.
